Learning Spanish at IH Barcelona
Student profile

Learning Spanish at IH Barcelona are students from all over the world (pictured, above, relaxing after class, down at the sea front). The majority of them are European, although we always have some Americans studying with us as we provide Spanish tuition for students from an American University which organises a study abroad programme in Barcelona.
You can read more about our students' experiences learning Spanish on the IH Barcelona site.
We always have a number of students from Asia learning Spanish with us as well (especially Japanese) and we even have some Brazilians who come all the way to Barcelona to take Spanish courses with us.
Countries of origin
The percentage of students from each region of the world last year was as follows:
- Western Europe: 70%
- North America: 15%
- Eastern Europe: 5%

- Others: 5%
The top 10 nationalities in the same period were, in order, first British, followed by American, Italian, German, Dutch, French, Swiss, Japanese, Swedish and Austrian.
Age range
The average age of our students is 24-28, although we often have students as young as 16 and as old as 75. The majority of our students are young professional people who need are learning Spanish to develop their careers. But we also have a large proportion of students who are still full-time students in their own countries as well as an increasing number of people who are simply learning Spanish as a hobby.
The age range of our students is as shown:
- 16-20 year-olds: 25%
- 20-30 year-olds: 45%
- 30-40 year-olds: 20%
- 40+: 10%
Student numbers
The maximum number of students we have taking an Internsive Spanish course at the same time is around 250 (July-August); the minimum number is around 100 (in January-February).
In the 12-month period between June 2003 and June 2004, we had over 3,000 students taking Spanish courses at the school.
Students of other languages
IH Barcelona also has a large number of Spanish students studying English in the school, so there is plenty of opportunity for students of Spanish to meet native speakers, make friends and improve their fluency in the bar and at social events.
Students' Manual
At the beginning of the course, students are presented with tourist maps and information to help them find their way around the city. They also receive a Students' Manual which, apart from introducing them to the school, provides them with current information on restaurants and bars, local transport, night life, museums and other cultural attractions.
