What's on in Palma de Mallorca

Music

The flamenco guitar maestro Paco de Lucía brings his "Cositas buenas" tour to the Palma Arena, January 11.

Tickets on sale online from Servicaixa.com.

Fiestas de San Sebastián

Palma's big fiesta runs from January 14-27. Of particular interest, on the 19th January, the residents of the city celebrate the Revetlla de Sant Sebastià (the patron saint of Palma), lighting foguerons (bonfires), grilling meat on them and then going from square to square listening to and dancing with the different bands playing.

Celebrated every year, the third week of January is full of daily events, the most spectacular of these being the Aiguafoc and the Correfocs.

The Aiguafoc consists of amazing firework displays which take place in the Paseo Marítimo. The Correfoc is an event where devils and dragons run and dance along the Paseo del Borne.

Football

There is Spanish first division in Palma, with Real Mallorca being the local side [website].

There are home games coming up against high-flying Atlético Madrid 26/27 January), with the next one after that not until Almeria come (weekend 9/10 February), with Betis (weekend 23/24 February) next after that.

As we near the mid-point of the season, Mallorca are eleventh in the Spanish league, 8 points off the pace for a slot in Europe next season, and just 3 above the relegation zone, which they've got out of in the last two seasons with a last-minute Houdini act. The games against Almeria (currently 16th) and Betis (18th) will be crucial ones against two clear relegation candidates.

Tickets are available from the Son Moix Stadium ticket office. For information on ticket sales and kickoff time call 971 73 99 41.
