What's on in Seville
Our selection of just some of the most interesting things on in Seville in the next few months...
Bullfighting
You're really only coming to Seville for the bullfights? Well, the Seville bullfight season begins in April, prior to the Feria de Abril.
A complete calendar of events is available at tauroentrada.com, where tickets can also be purchased.
Easter in Seville
Easter celebrations in Spain are very important. As we say in Seville, they bring art and religion together and Seville's Easter processions (afternoon and evening), with the streets thronged with people, are among the most spectacular in Spain.
We recommend you to buy a programme with information about times and routes of the numerous processions. Programmes are available in kiosks, in the newspapers, and you will also find information online (in Spanish).
Feria de Abril
April 7-13, 2008
Seville's April Fair takes place every year two weeks after Easter. Starting as a cattle fair in the middle of the 19th century, today is more an excuse to dress up and party. The fair is essentially a small temporary city set up for the week comprising rows of "casetas" or square tents lining the streets. The morning and afternoon is the time to see the fabulous horses and traditional costumes dresses, the evening for drinking and dancing sevillanas (a kind of flamenco).
Many casetas are private, which means that you can't get in if you don't know someone, so if you go without an invite, go directly to an information point to get a map and ask about the public casetas. These belong to political parties or the different districts of Seville. It's possible to have something to eat, "raciones" or "medias raciones" (full or half dishes from the menu). Drinks like a bottle of "fino" or "manzanilla" (white sherry wines) are approx €8, depending on the caseta, and we normally pay in rounds.
Before you leave the feria, the tradition is eat "churros con chocolate", and you will see people and places on the corner of Puente de Triana eating and watching the sunrise.
More information on the Feria.
Feria del Caballo, Jerez
May 6-13, 2007
Jerez, just an hour away by bus is an easy day trip from Seville. If you miss Seville's own Feria de Abril (or you were there but want some more of the same!), head off to Jerez's Horse Fair for the day - for the horses, the sherry and the flamenco. Bus from the Prado de San Sebastián bus station, trains from the Santa Justa station.
