What's on in June on the Costa de la Luz

Vejer de la Frontera: on excursion...
The month of July on the Costa de la Luz is the colour of the sand and the gold of the sunset on the beach at El Palmar, a scene that hundreds of people witness every day from the shade of one of the chiringuitos that give ambience to the nights in Vejer.
Traditions
July is marine month par excellence. Every year the coastal towns and cities celebrate the festival of the Virgen del Carmen and the neighbouring town of Barbate is no exception. From the 13th to the 17th of July, the streets of this fishing town are filled with the smell of festivites and of fresh fried fish. You shouldn’t miss out on any of the local tuna dishes, which are the speciality of the area.
On the big day of the Virgen del Carmen, the fishermen take the statue of the Virgin from the church and carry her to the port, where at dusk she boards a boat and takes a trip out to sea – an amazing spectacle of light and colour.
Sports
Since we are now in summer, you should make the most of the opportunity to practise sports on the beach. There are dozens of beaches along the Costa de la Luz and you can choose from a wide variety of possibilities. One of the most exciting and fun is diving. If you want to do a diving course with professional instructors you can do this with the company NaturExplorer.
If you like horses, you shouldn't miss the national show-jumping championships "Circuito de la Luna" at Montenmedio.
Music
Just about every day you can hear live music at one of the chiringuitos on the beach at El Palmar. Local musicians and musicians from other parts of the country play at sunset or during the night to an audience intent on enjoying themselves. Electronic music, reggae, modern flamenco, anything goes at places like El Gran Baba or Aborígenes.
Performances
During July and August there is a series of concerts in Vejer called Música por los Rincones (Music in the Corners). Making the most of the beautiful streets and plazas of the old part of town, the town council organises performances of jazz, flamenco and folk in different corners of Vejer. Definitely not to be missed!
A walk
Summer is a good time for a walk on the beach and we are recommending one with a strong sense of history. Cape Trafalgar, the scene of the one of the most important naval battles in history, lies between Vejer and Barbate.
To start the walk, catch the bus to El Palmar. From here, walk south along the beach to the ancient Chanca, the old fish salting factory which has now been turned into a restaurant. Continue along the beach to Trafalgar light-house, a magic place, which as well as holding memories of the battle is the site of an ancient Roman temple.
A suggestion
You shouldn’t miss the market which is held on the 22nd and 23rd of July in the old part of town between Puerta Cerrada, the church of el Divino Salvador and the Convento de las Concepcionistas, where local traders set up a Mercado Andalusí, a reminder of north-African medinas, and sell their best merchandise – local wares and crafts and fruit and vegetables. In the evening there are performances for children and at night a performance of Moroccan music.
